For much of the post-Cold War era, Canada relied heavily on geographic isolation, American military dominance, and multilateral alliances to guarantee national security. Protected by three oceans and sharing a border with the United States, Canada traditionally focused more on peacekeeping, continental defence, and limited expeditionary operations rather than maintaining large-scale offensive military capabilities. Countries around the world increasingly recognize the strategic importance of unmanned systems. Turkey became internationally known for the effectiveness of its domestically produced Bayraktar drones in conflicts ranging from Libya to Ukraine. Iran developed extensive drone capabilities despite sanctions and economic isolation. China invested heavily in autonomous systems, while the United States rapidly expanded drone integration across all branches of its military. Canada risks technological dependency if it fails to build comparable expertise and production capacity domestically.
Missile Systems and Deterrence
Missile systems are increasingly central to modern deterrence strategies. Precision-guided missiles allow states to defend territory, protect infrastructure, deter aggression, and project military capability at long range without relying solely on conventional troop deployments. Modern missile systems include air defence interceptors, anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weapons capable of striking targets with extreme speed and accuracy.
For Canada, missile defence is particularly important given the changing global security environment. Long-range missile technology proliferated rapidly during the 21st century, with states such as Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran developing increasingly sophisticated missile arsenals. North America itself is no longer viewed as geographically untouchable in the event of major conflict. Expanding drone and missile capabilities could also strengthen Canada’s domestic defence industry and technological sector. Canada already possesses advanced aerospace expertise through companies connected to aviation, electronics, satellite systems, and engineering. Increased investment in drones, autonomous systems, sensors, and missile technologies could stimulate domestic manufacturing, research, cybersecurity development, and artificial intelligence integration.
Countries increasingly view defence technology as strategically important not only militarily, but economically. Drone production, missile engineering, AI-assisted targeting systems, and advanced electronics are becoming major components of future industrial competitiveness. Estonia, Israel, South Korea, Turkey, and other technologically advanced states all demonstrated how defence innovation can strengthen broader technological ecosystems and industrial capabilities.
Canada often struggles with procurement delays and dependence on foreign suppliers for military equipment. Building stronger domestic production capacity could reduce strategic dependency while creating highly skilled industrial jobs and increasing national technological resilience. Defence manufacturing also contributes to supply chain security during crises, when international production networks may become unreliable or politically constrained.
NATO Obligations and Strategic Credibility
Canada’s defence spending and military readiness have increasingly become sources of debate within NATO. Many NATO members expanded military investment significantly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, particularly in areas involving drones, missile defence, artillery, and ammunition production. Canada, however, continues facing criticism for relatively low defence spending compared to alliance targets.
Expanding drone and missile capabilities would strengthen Canada’s credibility within NATO while improving interoperability with allied forces. Modern alliances increasingly depend on technological integration, intelligence sharing, and coordinated defence systems rather than simply troop numbers alone. Countries contributing advanced surveillance systems, cyber capabilities, and precision-guided weapons gain greater strategic relevance within alliance structures.
Canada’s international influence has historically depended partly on its ability to contribute meaningfully to collective defence arrangements. If modern warfare increasingly revolves around drones, missiles, and autonomous systems, Canada risks strategic marginalization if it fails to modernize accordingly. Military credibility affects diplomacy, deterrence, and geopolitical influence far beyond direct combat scenarios.
Ethical and Strategic Risks
Despite the advantages of drones and missile systems, there are also important ethical and strategic concerns. Drone warfare can lower the political threshold for military intervention because governments may perceive unmanned operations as less risky than deploying conventional troops. Autonomous weapons and AI-assisted targeting systems also raise serious ethical questions regarding accountability, civilian casualties, and the future role of human decision-making in warfare.
Missile proliferation similarly increases global instability and arms competition. As more countries develop long-range precision strike capabilities, the risk of rapid escalation during crises may increase significantly. Some critics argue that expanding military technology can fuel geopolitical tensions rather than reducing them, particularly if countries enter escalating arms races involving hypersonic missiles, autonomous drones, and advanced cyberwarfare systems.
Canada therefore faces the challenge of balancing modernization with responsible strategic planning. Expanding drone and missile capabilities does not necessarily require adopting aggressive military doctrines. Rather, the primary goal would involve strengthening deterrence, territorial defence, Arctic sovereignty, and technological resilience within an increasingly unstable global environment.

Canada’s future security environment will likely depend not only on geography and alliances, but also on whether the country is willing to invest seriously in the technologies shaping 21st-century warfare.
